Autumn Home Safety Checklist

14 Apr 2025

As the days grow shorter and temperatures start to drop, autumn is the ideal time to proactively assess your clients’ homes for seasonal safety risks. A well-timed maintenance review can prevent future incidents, improve comfort, and support continued independence.

Whether you’re working with NDIS participants, older Australians, or home care package clients, the early autumn window is a great opportunity to schedule minor home modifications or maintenance before winter sets in.

Here are the key areas we recommend reviewing in collaboration with your clients:

✅ External Lighting & Pathways

Low light in the mornings and evenings increases the risk of falls. Ensure motion-sensor lighting is installed and working at key entry points. Look out for uneven paths, broken pavers or steps, and overgrown garden beds.

✅ Gutters & Drainage

Blocked gutters can overflow during autumn rains, creating pooling around entrances and walkways. This can lead to mould growth or slippery surfaces. We offer gutter clearing and pressure washing as part of our trade services.

✅ Handrails & Access Points

Is the front or back entrance well-supported with rails? Are existing rails loose or worn? Autumn is a smart time to install or upgrade rails before conditions become wetter and more hazardous.

✅ Smoke Alarms & Heating Safety

With heaters being used again, now is the time to ensure smoke alarms are compliant, correctly placed, and operational. Portable heaters should be assessed for placement and safe use.

✅ Windows, Doors & Seals

Hard-to-open windows, stuck doors, and poor seals contribute to both safety issues and higher heating costs. Our trades team can quickly resolve these small but impactful problems.
